A Guest, a Check-Out, and a Mild Threat of Violence

This is a story I wasn’t planning to share. Mostly because, in the world of hospitality, you try to shake off the weird ones and move on with your life (or at least to the next load of laundry). But this one stuck. Not because it was dramatic. But because it was so absurdly dramatic, I had to write it down.

Let’s set the scene.

It’s morning. A lovely day in Hope, BC. The birds are out, the eggs are cooked, and the muffins are doing what muffins do. Our guests have all trickled out, rooms are being flipped, and the peaceful hum of check-out is in full swing.

Except… one room isn’t. Tranquility, ironically, is still locked up tight at 10:20 AM. This is 20 minutes past checkout—not the end of the world, but enough time to wonder if someone’s still blissfully snoozing or building a pillow fort out of spite.

Now, I’m not a pushy guy. I didn’t barge in with a clipboard or bang on the door like the sheriff from a Coen brothers film. I just gave a gentle knock and asked:

“Hey there, just wondering what time you think you’ll be heading out?”

A reasonable question, right?

Cue the door flying open and a man—mid-fifties, intense eyes, strong missed breakfast energy—erupts like I’d accused him of war crimes.

“WHEN I WANT TO! GIVE ME MY TIME!”

Ah. A poet.

Apparently, he had missed our 9:00 AM breakfast service by a full hour. Something that, based on his face, was a personal betrayal. Never mind that breakfast hours are posted in the room, emailed before arrival, and written down on the little card that politley reminds guest incase they missed the other 4 warnings.

I tried to keep things calm. I even smiled (which, in hindsight, may have been a mistake—nothing infuriates a tantrum like calm civility). But instead of winding down, the man cranked it up.

He told me I was rude. Told me I didn’t know how to talk to people. Threatened to call the police. And then, for the cherry on top, he took a deep breath and hinted that he might physically hurt me.

Now, in that moment, I had a choice. I could’ve gone full “the customer is always right” and begged him to bless me with his exit. But instead, I did the only thing my brain would allow:

I laughed.

Not a villainous laugh. More of a “Is this real life?” chuckle, the kind of sound you make when a grown man threatens violence over missing a muffin and being asked to honor a checkout time.

I didn’t threaten back. Didn’t raise my voice. I just stood there, marveling at the audacity.

Eventually, he stomped off. No punches thrown. No police called. Just a heavy sigh and the awkward shuffle of a man who didn't get to test his manhood infront of his wife —except, of course, the door slamming showed some effort.

And yes, he may still get the last laugh.

Because as anyone who runs a B&B will tell you, the greatest weapon in the modern guest’s arsenal isn’t a knife or a loud voice—it’s a one-star review. A single “The host was aggressive” can undo years of five-star tranquility.

So maybe he’ll write it. Maybe he won’t. Maybe he’s already yelling at the person at the gas station for not accepting expired coupons. I don’t know. What I do know is that I will never forget the man who screamed the word Tranquility at me while threatening to assault me in my own hallway.

So why share this story?

Because running a bed and breakfast is beautiful, hilarious, exhausting work. Because 99.9% of our guests are lovely humans who eat their eggs and leave on time. And because, every once in a while, someone walks through the door with enough misplaced rage to fuel a soap opera arc.

And you know what? That’s part of the charm.

If you're ever in Hope, BC and want to stay somewhere where the stories are as good as the wafles—you know where to find us.
